We sat in the living room while getting ready and my eyes filled with tears. My thoughts drifted away and I realized that somewhere along the way, between playing in sprinklers, tackling each other, and watching movies on repeat, we became friends. I thought of the time that her blonde, wavy hair swayed from side to side as she eagerly told me how to win at Donkey Kong.

She pulled me out of my thought, asking me what I thought of her makeup. There it was... that sparkle. That same sparkle that appeared the day she told me about the blonde boy at school. The boy that had just gone and changed her whole world.

Jaelyn shows me what it's like to be wild, free and eat way too much popcorn. She shows me what it's like to be brave and face fears head on. By living life with her as a child, I saw what it was like to boldly love. I saw what it was like to spill cottage cheese in your hair and own a lot of animals. I have gained laughter and a friend in her. She was a beautiful kind of wild and crazy as a child but I have watched her grow into a woman who is wild and crazy about Jesus. And I don’t know that there’s anything better than knowing that we will inherit the Kingdom of God together one day.

Her eyes changed the day that she met David. I have watched how he takes care of Jaelyn, challenges her to eat her vegetables, and joyfully serves her. I thought for a long time that she needed someone who was going to keep her grounded. And I thought that when her eyes changed it was because she had finally landed. But I realized quickly that that wasn’t true. What I saw in her eyes was the joy of knowing she had found the one who could lead her while she flies.
